Comment on David RePass, Measuring Attitudes Toward Candidat
Tue Jan 22, 2008 6:04 pm

I share the concerns that RePass expresses about the open-ended like/dislike questions about the candidates. David Holian and I worked with these items from the 1996, 2000, and 2004 ANES surveys in our 2007 APSA paper, which focused on candidate personal traits. The coding scheme is a mess, especially when it comes to classifying references to candidate personal traits (e.g., integrity, competence, leadership, etc.). I support any attempt to revise the coding scheme, and I (and David Holian) would be happy to work on the codes dealing with personal traits.
